Job Summary
The Director of Environmental, Health & Safety (EHS) and DOT Compliance leads development, implementation, and management of comprehensive EHS programs, technologies, and procedures across Border States' employee-owners, distribution centers, and branches. This position champions a proactive safety culture and ensures compliance with all applicable federal, state, and local regulations. This position drives continuous improvement in EHS performance, wellbeing of employee-owners, and environmental sustainability.
Responsibilities
Essential Functions Leads the day-to-day functions of the corporate Environmental, Health & Safety team, including all staffing, leadership, forecasting, and expense management functions. Leads development and execution of a comprehensive EHS strategy aligned with Border States' overall business objectives including setting measurable goals, tracking progress, and communicating results to leadership and employee-owners. Ensures compliance with all applicable EHS regulations (OSHA, EPA, DOT, etc.) and maintains required records and documentation. Defines and tracks key EHS metrics and reports on performance to leadership including, but not limited to, incident rate (TCIR), FMCSA performance metrics (safe driving, hours of service, vehicle maintenance, driver fitness), branch safety and sustainability, audit scorecards, and operationally controlled emissions. Identifies areas for improvement and implements corrective action plans. Leads Border States' strategies and initiatives focused on internal branding and culture of EHS initiatives, including safety, sustainability, and employee-owner health and wellness. Partners closely with communications, change management, and branding teams on efforts. Partners closely with distribution and supply chain leadership, regional safety resources, and all logistics professional employee-owners on safety and sustainability initiatives, policies, and procedures. Communicates effectively with all stakeholders regarding EHS initiatives and performance. Leads overall technical strategies in the EHS space, including selection and implementation of enterprise EHS system(s) for compliance and reporting. Leads the enterprise safety steering committee with representation from other key areas of the business. Serves on the Executive Safety Committee within Border States. Leads the operational sustainability strategy for the organization. Works closely with fleet and facilities leaders as well as legal and compliance on our broader enterprise environmental and compliance strategies. Develops and delivers engaging EHS training programs for employees at all levels. Promotes a culture of safety awareness, environmental awareness, and continuous learning. Closely monitors changes in regulations and adapts Border States' EHS policies, procedures, and programs where necessary. Non-Essential Functions Assists with onsite safety audits and inspections alongside regional safety team. Travels to Border States locations to connect with employee-owners on EHS strategies, policies, and procedures. Travels to relevant industry events and conferences to learn about new EHS systems, technology, and practices. Builds strong connections across the Electrical Distribution industry with other EHS professionals. Performs other duties as assigned by supervisor or designate.
Qualifications
Four-year degree in occupational safety and health, environmental science, or a related field required. 10+ years' exp rience of leading and managing teams focused on EHS and/or DOT compliance and strategies required. Professional EHS certifications such as CSP (Certified Safety Professional) or CIH (Certified Industrial Hygienist) preferred. Experience in the electrical distribution industry or adjacent industrial distribution industry preferred. Experience or certifications with Lean principles and continuous improvement methodologies preferred. Strong working knowledge of PC for Windows, Microsoft Office Suite (Excel, Word, and PowerPoint), internet, and email required. Ability to read, write, and speak English required.
Skills and Abilities
Excellent interpersonal, written, and verbal communication and reading skills at all levels in the organization. Strong knowledge of OSHA, EPA, DOT, and other applicable EHS regulations. Knowledge and experience with selection and deployment of EHS systems and technologies. Strong strategic thinking and problem-solving skills. Ability to navigate organizational changes within a growing company. Competence leading and influencing employee owners that are direct and non-direct reports.
