Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

The UNC Charlotte Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering ( CEE ) invites applications for a Tenure-Track Assistant Professor position in the area of Water Resources Engineering with an anticipated start date of August 15, 2025. All candidates will be considered, but those with expertise in the following areas are especially encouraged to apply: groundwater and/or surface water hydrology, hydraulics, climate change, extreme events, artificial intelligence/machine learning approaches, and large system modeling.

Successful candidates will demonstrate a strong commitment to research, teaching, and service. We seek individuals who can contribute to the department’s research initiatives and engage effectively with students at both undergraduate and graduate levels.

Candidates will be responsible for establishing a robust research program including securing external funding, publishing high-quality research in peer-reviewed journals, mentoring and advising students, including supervising doctoral dissertation research, developing and teaching undergraduate and graduate courses in their respective area of water resources engineering, and participating in departmental and university service activities.

Minimum Experience / Education:

UNC Charlotte gives primary consideration to the earned doctorate or terminal degree in the teaching discipline or a related discipline.

Preferred Education Skills and Experience:

Required qualifications include a Ph.D. in civil engineering or a related field. While not required, candidates with a Professional Engineering (PE) license, or willingness to obtain one, are encouraged to apply. Candidates are expected to exhibit dedication to excellence in research, teaching, and professional service.

Priority will be given to candidates with research interests that align with the department’s strategic areas of focus, a strong record of scholarly research and publications, a record of obtaining or the potential to obtain significant research funding, and experience with interdisciplinary research and industry partnerships. The ability to contribute to the University’s Research Areas of Focus and Distinction (such as Smart and Sustainable Cities) is beneficial. A Ph.D. degree in Civil Engineering (or a related field) is required. The College of Engineering has several research centers that offer excellent opportunities for collaboration. These centers include the Center for Environmental Monitoring and Informatics Technologies for Public Health ( CEMIT ), Charlotte AIR institute, the Center for Applied Geographic Information Science ( CAGIS ), and the Energy Production & Infrastructure Center ( EPIC ).
