The School of Design in the College of Art and Design at the Rochester Institute of Technology is accepting nominations for the endowed Melbert B. Cary Professorship in Graphic Arts. Applicants must demonstrate a significant trajectory of professional experience and expertise in typography, graphic arts, printing, or another typography-related field. We are looking for graphic artists and designers who are highly respected by their peers and industries. Anyone can nominate a candidate and self-nominations are also welcome. The appointment begins in August 2025 and is for two years with a possibility for renewal. The position is in person at RIT’s main campus in Rochester. Candidates who propose a flexible work arrangement will be considered if the outcomes of the position are not affected. Expectations include teaching in the undergraduate Graphic Design program and the College of Art and Design; teaching 2-4 courses a year depending on the candidate’s skills and research plans; participating in innovative teaching and curriculum development; conducting research and scholarship that takes advantage of the RIT Cary Graphic Arts Collection; serving as a facilitator of collaborations between the Cary Collection and the School of Design; rendering service to the school, college, university, and/or community; coordinating the annual Goudy Memorial Lecture; career advising and mentoring undergraduate students; and participating in professional organizations important to the field of design. Interest or experience in artificial intelligence tools and methods applied to design workflows is an added and welcomed asset.REQUIRED MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:A baccalaureate, masters, or doctoral degree in a graphic arts related field.Minimum of 10 years full time professional experience in a typography related field.Demonstrated professional achievement in a typography related field, records of which may include conference proceedings, presentations, publications, patents, typeface designs, and other notable accomplishments.Demonstrated teaching experience.Demonstrated professional communication, presentation, and writing skills.Ability to contribute meaningfully to the College’s continuing commitment to cultural diversity, pluralism, and individual differences. Interest or experience in applying artificial intelligence tools and methods to design workflows is a plus.
Minimum Salary: 68000 Maximum Salary: 100000 Salary Unit: Yearly
