<h3>Occupational Description</h3><br>Truck Drivers operate a variety of trucks to transport materials and finished products from one location to another location. Heavy Truck Drivers drive a single-body truck which carries materials weighing three tons or more. There are a variety of heavy-duty trucks, including dump trucks, tow trucks, flatbed trucks, redi-mix trucks, and tank trucks. (NOTE: In Nebraska, Truck Driver Heavy and Light or Delivery are combined under one license.)<br><h3>Licensure Requirements</h3><br>Commercial Drivers Licenses (CDLs) are required for individuals driving a vehicle that weighs more than 26,000 pounds (gross vehicle weight rating), carries 16 or more passengers, or transports placarded amounts of hazardous materials. Applicants for CDL Intrastate (within Nebraska) Classes “A,” “B,” or “C” must be 18 years of age. Interstate drivers (across state lines) Class “A”, “B,” or “C” must be 21 years of age. All individuals holding a Nebraska Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) are required to certify to the DMV what type of operation they engage in. There are four categories: Category A - Interstate & Non-Excepted; Category B - Interstate & Excepted; CategoryC - Intrastate & Non-Excepted; Category D - Intrastate & Excepted. In addition, if they operate in Category A (Interstate & Non-Excepted), Drivers are required to provide the DMV with a current copy of their medical examiner’s certificate (card - not long form) and keep current with the DMV. Both written knowledge and skill tests (vehicle inspection, basic controls, and road test) are required to obtain a first-time CDL license. Prior to the issuance of a Nebraska CDL with the hazardous materials endorsement, individuals will be required, as per the U.S. PATRIOT ACT, to have a Transportation Security Administration (TSA) security threat assessment completed.<br><h3>Fees</h3><br>Five-Year CDL Fee (as of July 1, 2019)- $59.50 Change of Class, Restriction, and/or Endorsement- $14.50 Five-Year Renewal Fee- $59.50<br><h3>Renewal</h3><br>Renewal is required every five years, with the CDL expiring on the licensee’s birthday in the fifth year after issuance. The renewal fee is $59.50. When renewing a CDL license, if the license has not been expired for one year or more, the written and driving test will be waived, with the exception of the hazardous materials written exam, which is always required.
